Kiama FurnitureClass 1: Dry White – Fragrant or Floral Variety
Sponsored by: The Kiama Furniture Company

JUDGES COMMENTS: Well made wines show real potential for this variety in the district. The overriding varietal appears to be citrus blossom and those wines which were handled to retain freshness emphasise this quality. Disappointingly juice handling faults disadvantage some. Attention needs to be paid to polish / finish the wines properly.

Tourism KiamaClass 2: Dry White – Chardonnay
Sponsored by: Tourism Kiama

JUDGES COMMENTS: A very disappointing class overall. The variety appears not to offer true varietal definition and depth. Chardonnay requires a balance of fruit ripeness with sugar ripeness and it rarely occurred in the flight of wines. The panel suggested close viticultural inspection / attention is required to provide suitable raw material to the winery.

Kiama IndependentClass 3: Dry White – Semillon
Sponsored by: Kiama Independent

JUDGES COMMENTS: Exceptionally strong class.  Shows that Semillon has huge potential in the area.  These wines are world class and unique. The Gold Medal winning wine was the most complete wine of the bracket. Immaculate winemaking practices enhance the potential of the variety.

Fredericks IGAClass 4: Dry White – Verdelho
Sponsored by: Fredericks IGA

JUDGES COMMENTS: These wines exhibit excellent underlying fruit flavours. However some examples were "clumsy" and lacking balance. Verdelho requires ripeness to exhibit its true character but the wines need balancing acid. Fruit condition is the critical factor to achieve this. Disappointing winemaking faults were still prevalent.

Clear ImageClass 5: Dry White – Sauvignon Blanc
Sponsored by: Clear Image Labels

JUDGES COMMENTS: There seems to be some confusion between tropical fruit and herbaceous styles of Sauvignon Blanc in the area. Award winning wines were very well made from both ends of the fruit spectrum but as yet no standouts have emerged. Some winemaking faults still evident in some wines.

Kiama CoveClass 6: Dry White – Blend or Other Variety
Sponsored by: Kiama Cove Boutique Motel

JUDGES COMMENTS: Blended wines are interesting but seem to be a result of necessity rather than improving the wine. Some very well made commercial wines. Interestingly, the single varietals show great promise. Handling issues are still preventing top scores but the judges unanimously agreed producers should continue to persevere with the Pinot Gris, Arneis and Viognier.

Raine & HorneClass 10: Dry Red – Cabernet Sauvignon
Sponsored by: Raine & Horne

JUDGES COMMENTS: Despite the relatively low scores this was a strong class highlighted by minimal winemaking faults. The emphasis for the variety needs to be placed on fruit ripeness and structure. Cabernet Sauvignon is an unforgiving variety that requires perseverance, diligence and above all, patience.

RWEClass 12: Dry Red – Blend or Other Variety
