2004 Kiama Regional Wine Show Congratulations and thanks to each of the vignerons and winemakers who entered the 2004 Inaugural Kiama Regional Wine Show. 109 wines were entered by 16 vineyards. This is excellent for a wine show where entries are restricted on a regional basis. It demonstrates a high level of support from the members of' the Shoalhaven Coast Wine Industry Association and the Southern Highlands Vignerons Association for Kiama's wine show. Kiama Show Society has been promoting the agricultural and horticultural products of the region and rewarding the achievements of excellence through competition since its inception in 1848. The decision to promote the emerging viticultural industry in the Shoalhaven Coast and the Southern Highlands, the two newest wine regions recognised by the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation, was a natural one. Kiama's traditional agricultural role is as the birthplace of the dairy industry. The dairy industry has recognised and embraced the emerging wine industry and toasted the marriage of two highly acknowledged complementary partners, wine and cheese. The process of judging the wines was entirely independent. The Society would like to acknowledge the assistance and efforts of our judging panel, Geoff Goodworth, Chris Cameron, Keith Tulloch and associate Simon Hurford. 42 medals were awarded; 2 gold, 8 silver and 32 bronze. This is an appropriate ratio for a regional wine show such as ours and is positive proof that the vineyards of our district are getting it right. As volumes of production increase they will become a force to be reckoned with on the state, national and international stage. We are lucky to have them on our doorstep. The Kiama Regional Wine Show has had the generous and enthusiastic support of a range of sponsors including the IMB Community Foundation, the Illawarra Regional Development Board, Kiama Municipal Council, Tourism Kiama, Dairy Australia and Dairy Farmers Group. At the Kiama Regional Wine Show Presentation Dinner, David Campbell, Minister for the Illawarra, Regional and Development and Small Business was overwhelming in his enthusiasm for the emerging world class wine industry. He encouraged us all to connect wine, dairy, tourism and fine dining. Kiama Show Society commends our regional wines to you. Sample them with friends and visit the local vineyards to experience first hand a vibrant emerging new agricultural industry in an idyllic setting. While you are at it, try the other natural produce of our district. Stay in Kiama and have an Illawarra, South Coast and Southern Highlands food and wine getaway! SANDY RENDEL President
